National Pig Day at Cochon

March One was National Pig Day, and although the Queen Village BYOB called Cochon (french for "pig") wasn't offering anything special to mark the occasion, we decided it was the best place to have our own impromptu celebration. We tried a few of theirspecials that night, including fried oysters, sweetbreads, pork croquette, pork shank and quail. It was all quite tasty, with a few standouts.

Seared Scallops (with spinach rather than the usual frisée, by request.)

Pork Croquettes, Blood Sausage

Fried Oysters

Grilled Sweetbreads

Pork Shank

Pork Shoulder

Steak Frites

Quail with Foie Gras and Truffle

The oysters had a light, airy crunch, and a creamy, juicy interior. The sweetbreads were smooth and delicate, with a slight smoky crust from the grill. The pork shank was tender, with a nice caramelized exterior, the bite of mustard and cabbage offsetting any residual fat. Quail stuffed with foie and truffles, what could be better? Oh, right, put it on a potato pancake!

I'm eager to find some other vague excuse to head down there and feast, and soon...

  1. I'm in. Is that vague enough? Really, I'm way overdue.

  2. I'm confident we can find some other obscure holiday or celebration to use as an excuse to go pig out...

  4. Thanks, Brian. Yeah, I'm kind of philosophically opposed to flash photos in restaurants. It annoys other people trying to have a nice meal, and flash pics tend to look kind of washed-out anyway, unless you get crazy with big auxiliary flash units, diffusers, umbrellas, etc. I suspect that might negatively impact the dining experience!

So for now I'll live with a little grain, and a little blur...

But back to food: yes, you should try Cochon immediately!
